Andrew Bianco spends Winter Break volunteering in the Windy City

2015 Feb 27

Andrew Bianco of Sharon was one of 20 students who participated in Baldwin Wallace University's Alternative Break service program and traveled to Chicago over Winter Break. Students had a choice of focusing on social justice issues or on LGBT and mental health issues.

Bianco, a graduate of Hickory High School majoring in Spanish and chemistry, participated in the social justice issues group that partnered with the Rice Child and Family Center, Open Books, and Feed My Starving Children. Projects focused on youth, literacy, poverty and hunger. Students facilitated games, activities and educational sessions for children with a history of violence and abuse, including a holiday celebration at the end of their week together.

The Alternative Break service program at BW provides students the opportunity to spend their college breaks serving with other students. It's a great way to make a difference, travel to other cities, learn new skills and meet people with similar interests. Trips focus on direct service, teamwork, reflection, education and fun. Alternative Break is one of many community service programs organized by the University's Office of Community Outreach to support BW's mission of creating contributing, compassionate citizens.
