Courteney Levet spends summer break volunteering in North Carolina

2016 Jul 15

Courteney Levet of Cleveland is one of 10 environmentally-minded Baldwin Wallace University students who gave up a week of summer break to make a difference through BW's Alternative Break Service Program. Levet, a graduate of Ohio Virtual Academy majoring in creative writing, explored issues of environmental justice, sustainability and environmental restoration in partnership with the North Carolina Coastal Federation. The Federation empowers coastal residents and visitors from all walks of life to protect and restore the water quality and critically important natural habitats of the North Carolina coast. The week included visits with local schools, work with reef restoration projects, beach clean-ups and an examination of their own eco-footprint. The trip was led by BW student Sarah Yeates with support from faculty adviser Jordan Saul.

The Alternative Break experience at BW provides students with opportunities to make a difference, travel to another area, learn new skills and meet people with similar interests. Alternative Break is one of many community service programs organized by the David & Frances Brain Center for Community Engagement to support BW's mission of empowering students to become contributing, compassionate citizens of an increasingly global society. Community groups interested in partnering with BW can contact the Center for Community Engagement at 440-826-2403 or oco@bw.edu.
