Elizabeth Cherry teaches English in the Dominican Republic

2016 Aug 24

Elizabeth Cherry of Columbus was among 11 Baldwin Wallace University students from a variety of majors who participated in an International Service Experience in the Dominican Republic. The students spent two weeks in May serving with Outreach360, an organization that seeks to transform the world through the education and development of disadvantaged children.

Cherry, a graduate of Worthington Kilbourne High School majoring in math and philosophy, helped teach English to first through seventh graders at Escuela Basica John F. Kennedy in Monte Cristi during the day. Evening activities included lesson planning, exploring the city and participating in educational and cultural activities. Cherry also had the unique opportunity to travel to the market at Dajabon and witness the celebrations that ensued after President Danilo Medina was elected for a second term.

The International Service Experience (ISE) at Baldwin Wallace University is an extension of the Alternative Break program which offers students the opportunity to spend their college breaks serving with other students. ISE offers students an intense service experience in places such as Lesotho in southern Africa, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.
