Lyndsey Marshall spends Winter Break volunteering in Chicago

2016 Jan 26

Lyndsey Marshall of Warren was one of 11 students who participated in Baldwin Wallace University's Alternative Break service program and traveled to Chicago over Winter Break. Marshall, a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School majoring in mathematics, took part in a variety of activities that focused on the trip theme of "Youth and Trauma." The trip was led by BW student Alanna Grafius with support from staff advisor Sarah Tiemann.

Students volunteered at three sites during the trip. They worked with vulnerable children who have a history of violence and abuse at Children's Home + Aid at the Rice Child + Family Center. A highlight of their visit was helping with a Holiday Gift Shop for the children. At Cornerstone Community Outreach, students helped organize Christmas donations for two shelters. The group also packed meals at Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit organization that provides meals for malnourished children in nearly 70 countries.

The Alternative Break experience at BW provides students with opportunities to make a difference, travel to another area, learn new skills and meet people with similar interests. Alternative Break is one of many community service programs organized by the David & Frances Brain Center for Community Engagement to support BW's mission of empowering students to become contributing, compassionate citizens of an increasingly global society.
