El-Mahdy, a graduate of Strongsville Sr. High School majoring in biology, received the Brain Center Volunteer of the Year award. The award is presented to a student who participated in a Brain Center Program such as Alternative Break, Weekly Programs, Campus Kitchens Project, etc. They have spent a significant amount of time serving through a Brain Center program(s) during 2016-17; made discernible contributions to the program(s) or organization(s) and had the ability to relate to the populations served.

The annual ceremony celebrates student leaders, faculty and staff advisers, organizations and programs that have made an impact on the BW community and beyond. BW students have the opportunity to join over 100 student clubs, professional organizations and honor societies, ranging from community service and political action groups to fraternities and sororities.
