William Anastasiadis spends Winter Break volunteering in the Windy City

2015 Feb 27

William Anastasiadis of Warren was one of 20 students who participated in Baldwin Wallace University's Alternative Break service program and traveled to Chicago over Winter Break. Students had a choice of focusing on social justice issues or on LGBT and mental health issues.

Anastasiadis, a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School majoring in psychology and neuroscience psychology, participated in the LGBT and mental health issues group that partnered with the Oral History Project, the Night Ministry, and the Illinois Caucus for Mental Health. Students worked on completing an inventory of youth-friendly healthcare facilities, creating holiday kits for homeless individuals, and writing summary pieces for a national oral history project. The group also created a video of tips for youth on getting healthcare services and being a self-advocate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZP22oGMET0.

The Alternative Break service program at BW provides students the opportunity to spend their college breaks serving with other students. It's a great way to make a difference, travel to other cities, learn new skills and meet people with similar interests. Trips focus on direct service, teamwork, reflection, education and fun. Alternative Break is one of many community service programs organized by the University's Office of Community Outreach to support BW's mission of creating contributing, compassionate citizens.
