Baldwin Wallace University

The following students achieved membership in the BW Sigma Chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, the International Honor Society in Philosophy, in the spring 2017 semester. Undergraduate students are eligible for active membership if they have completed three semesters or five quarters of the college course, rank in the upper 35 percent of their class, and have completed at least two semester courses in philosophy with an average grade of over the second highest grade of the working scale.

The following students achieved membership in the BW Delta Upsilon Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society in the spring 2017 semester. Society membership is extended to students who have completed at least 12 credit hours of history courses; have at least a 3.1 GPA in history courses; and have at least a 3.0 GPA in all non-history courses.

BW student vocalists and orchestra members performed the opera "Dialogues of the Carmelites" during the spring semester. Francis Poulenc's fictionalized portrayal of the Martyrs of Compiegne tells the timely and tragic story of Carmelite nuns who were guillotined in Paris for refusing to renounce their vocation during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror.

Baldwin Wallace University senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC midfielder Maddie Russell (Lakewood/Rocky River) has been selected as the OAC Women's Lacrosse Offensive of the Week.

Student choreographers and dancers created and performed a collaborative new music and dance project inspired by assistant professor of biology Dr. Karen Munroe's research on the social and mating behaviors of squirrels.

Ten BW students took a walk in the footsteps of NASA astronauts over 2017 spring break, the first college students in the nation to pilot a new NASA educational program designed with the help of BW faculty. The program, which is designed to promote teamwork, problem solving, communication and engineering solutions to space science scenarios, culminated with a graduation ceremony and exclusive "Brunch with an Astronaut."

Over 80 students participated in the 16th Annual Dance Marathon at Baldwin Wallace University. Dance Marathon is the largest philanthropy organization on campus. Lasting 12 hours, the marathon consists of performers, dancing and HIV/AIDS education. All proceeds are donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, which seeks to educate and reduce the the transmission and cases of pediatric AIDS worldwide.

The BW Women's Club awarded scholarships to six exceptional women on the basis of their academic record, future plans, goals and needs. The scholarships were awarded at a luncheon on Feb. 26, 2017.

Baldwin Wallace University senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American jumper Erin Kasper (Amherst/Marion Steele) has been named the OAC Field Athlete of the Week.

Students at Baldwin Wallace University elected their 105th student body president and vice president. The winning slate of President Kevin Kaufhold '18 from Olmsted Township, Ohio and Vice President Olivia Murphy '18 from Johnstown, Penn. took the oath of office on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The BW Alternative Break service program gives students the opportunity to spend their breaks helping others. Each experience is led by a BW student with support from a University faculty or staff adviser. Student volunteers traveled to Detroit over Thanksgiving break and to San Antonio, New Orleans and Chicago over winter break.

Forty-nine students achieved membership in Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) National Honor Society for First-Year Students in the spring 2017 semester. ALD is an honor society for full-time students who achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher and were in the top 20 percent of their class during their first year of higher education.

16 Baldwin Wallace University winter sports student-athletes were named as Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference.

Baldwin Wallace University sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis student-athlete Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) has been named as the OAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time in his career.

Baldwin Wallace University senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference thrower Kasey Clouse (Norwalk/Western Reserve) has been named as the OAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week.

Eighteen students spent the fall 2016 semester away from BW learning in another country. With help from the BW Study Abroad Center's Independent Study program, students created individualized immersion experiences in Austria, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Russia, Scotland, South Korea, Sweden and Switzerland.

Twenty-two BW students participated in the "Discovering India" program, a transformative experience in Bangalore, New Delhi and Agra, during the fall 2016 semester. The program provides an in-depth understanding of India's culture, social institutions and business environment through a semester of study and preparation in the classroom before traveling to India for hands-on experiences.

Three Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball student-athletes have been named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference team.
